| Pre dinner drinks on the promenade |
Well it has been a few days since we blogged so time for an update. Not much has happen since Steve's last posts as the weather disintegrated here. We had torrential rain, thunder & lightening and we only ventured out between showers to get supplies for lunch & dinner and spent our confinement doing research on insurance for the boat and looking for a certified boat surveyor and watching the "Giro" live on Eurosport. Split is a beautiful city that dates back to around 300 AD there is a cathedral which is the oldest cathedral building in the world and was build in 305 AD. The rest of the main part of the city is also very old and has been built around the Diocletian Palace the streets are very narrow and there are lots of little cafe's everywhere that the locals go to for an evening drink and chat.

Nice walk back to the apartment

The Croatians are a very social people and love to meet for a drink and chat, they don't appear to be heavy drinkers and will sit on one beer for a long time it seems to be the socialising that is important. They like to dress up in their "Sunday Best" and walk up and down the promenade chatting and stopping every now and then to sit on one of the many seats along the promenade in front of the Diocletian Palace and the new promenade that was build just recently further around the point towards the Marina. We have done a lot of walking here exploring etc. I will say that the one thing that has really disappointed me is the graffiti everywhere even in the old city. This place is so old and beautiful and I find it very hard to reconcile the disrespect and lack of pride that allows this to happen and then to not fight it by covering it up every time it appears.
There is also a fantastic market next to the old city where people come to sell their produce they start very early in the morning and some of them are still going till quite late at night, working very hard. We finally got a nice fine day yesterday and walked down to the Internet cafe so that we could print off some forms that we need to fill out and fax off to various people. It was also our wedding anniversary yesterday, 31 years, where has the time gone, and how wonderful to be in such a beautiful place at the beginning of the next stage in our lives together, very exciting. We decided to go out for dinner last night in celebration.
The plan for today is to go to the beach and enjoy the sun, maybe watch the "Giro". Tomorrow I would like to tackle walking up the hill behind the old city to what looks like a park it is supposed to have a great view out over the old city, so should be worth the effort.
Cheers for now
Angie
