T W B in paradise continues

Day 2 of Paradise with the Palletts

Wow the lightening display was amazing lighting up all the boats in the bay.  The thunder cracking with enormous intensity.  It was all hands on deck closing hatches and windows.  At one stage the lightening and thunder was so st5rong that we called to Steve are you still there?"  The wind was gusting 30 plus knots so was a real test to the anchor.  We set sail for Unije with hardly any wind, but did manage to get a little bit of sailing time much to Wayne and Bryden's delight.  Bryden had a turn at the helm and spent a lot of the time mesmerised by all the dials.  There is a depth gauge, wind speed dial, speedo plus many others and he particularly like the speedo readings.  We passed loads of islands and many of them were uninhabited.  Overall there are 1244 islands in Croatia dotted around the Adriatic with boats cruising all over the place.  Oh man you should see the size of these boats - massive and worth millions. Gob smacking !

We arrived at our bay and got straight into the water for a snorkel.  There are lots of kina here and small silvery fish with a black dot on their tail, Gobbie fish and Sea Cucumbers.  The water temperature is 24 degrees and so clear.  We found some nice shells and a couple of empty Kina shells for Ange.  We thoroughly enjoyed our snorkelling and I was impressed with Ange's enthusiasm, when I thought that she'd had enough I started heading back to the boat only to look around and she was still continuing her exploration.  Ange loved it,  so I am giving her Bryden's flippers so that she can carry on with the snorkelling after we have gone.  Pivo time is a must - every afternoon that we arrive in a bay out comes the beer and snacks.  Boy we can get used to this!  Dinner as usual was delicious thanks to Ange's culinary skills.

A little boat came around selling fresh fruit and veges plus bread.  I bought some food but they forgot to give me the lettice or was this a cunning plan to make money?  the funny thing is we were just saying the other day that they could make lots of money selling wares to all the boaties in the bay.

Anyway we had a great day.

Day 3 of Paradise with the Palletts

We continued heading North to Pula after bringing up the anchor the anchor winch jammed and Steve cleaned it all up after taking the winch apart, but it still continued to be unpredictable.  We had to  get it fixed at Pula.

We had a bit more sailing time today, but mostly motoring as the breeze was too fickle and was usually right on the nose.  So when our speed reduced right down to 2 or 3 knots the motor would start up again.  There are no sandy beaches just rocky out crops where the holiday makers set up for the day sunbathing and picnicing, perched on rocks speckled with brightly coloured towels and umbrellas all the way up steepish cliff faces.  We passed several lighthouses, villages and camping grounds where people in tents and caravans park on sloping ground.  Must be interesting sleeping arrangements - especially in a tent when they all roll together into the downward slope.

On our way in the entrance to Pula Harbour there is an old sea wall which apparently used to have an amphitheatre on it but was destroyed by the Austrians. Today there are some ruins still standing and made for some interesting photo's. The harbour itself is industrial and not very pretty apart from the colleseium which we could see was right there at the Marina. We sat
watching others make a real hash of pulling into the marina when a swiss guy pulls into the spot next to us and nearly wiped out the bow of S & A's boat. Unreal- what a wally...didn't even apologise.

Steve managed to get a guy to fix the anchor winch for 50 Euros and was fun to listen to him cause he kept looking at various parts of the winch saying "very good, very good" which we worked out meant all the working parts are in very good condition and could be a connection problem... Anyway we didn't have anymore problems after that.

We strolled over to inspect the Collesium and WOW it is incredible. This is a majestic building which was built by the Romans over 2000 yrs ago. It was a place for the Gladiators killing each other, killing animals and general entertainment. We ventured through the streets which are a maze of cobbled alleyways and beautiful shuttered windowed buildings with quaint little balconies which are overflowing with flowering pots.
These little alleyways are jammed with little shops and restaurant's. We stopped at one bar for our ritual Pivo. Sitting next to a fan which was sending out a fine mist of water to keep the patrons cool. At first I thought Bryden had squirted his wattle bottle into it. It was fun to watch the world go by and we got pretty good at making up stories about all the people who walked by.
We had yummy pizza for dinner at one of the restaurant's  and then moved back to the yacht but not before having an ice-cream each. On our stroll back to the boat we came across a Roman Square, where there is a tall pillared building and vast area where they put on entertainment and markets.

Great place and yet another great day. Tracey xx
